In 2009, FAU-Erlangen-Nürnberg decided that their facility services needed to be improved. The students and staff had separate cards for the library, paying for food and drinks in the canteen, printing and copying, and access to premises. There was a jumble of different technologies in use, and the payment terminals at the copiers, cash registers, printers and vending machines came from a variety of suppliers. It’s hardly surprising that they felt the need for a single card for all uses and a single source of supply.
It took a while to iron out the requirements for the new multifunctional smartcard system and translate them into a European invitation to tender. Ximedes won the bid in 2011, and in May 2011 a contract with a value of roughly €1 million was signed. The aim was to replace all payment terminals with Ximedes FacilityPro terminals. The new FAU cards had to reliably integrate the existing access control system and be usable for all payments both within the university organisation (FAU) and within “Studentenwerk”, the organisation that provides all catering and other support services.
